Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP)

The Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) recognizes small companies in high hazard industries that have demonstrated exemplary achievements in workplace safety and health. Employers that have developed, implemented, and work to continuously improve the effectiveness of their workplace safety and health management program may be eligible for this important program. Companies that have met all the requirements for SHARP will have fewer and less severe injuries and illness and therefore should have reduced workers compensation costs. Additionally, companies meeting the specific SHARP requirements may be exempt from general scheduled OSHA inspections for one year and will receive a certificate of recognition signed by the Assistant Secretary of Labor-OSHA.

To achieve SHARP recognition companies must:

  • employ less than 250 employees at a fixed worksite and less than 500 employees nationwide;
  • receive comprehensive safety and health surveys conducted by Georgia Tech’s Consultation Program for up to one year to identify hazards, evaluate injury history, and assess the safety and health management system;
  • correct all identified safety and health hazards, and involve employees in the development, implementation, and operation of all elements necessary for effective safety and health program;
  • reduce their Days Away, Restriced, or Transfer Rate (DART) and Injury Incidence Rate (IIR) to below the national average for their industry, based on at least one full year’s experience; and
  • agree to request additional consultative visits if major changes in the workplace conditions or processes introduce new hazards.
