Company Interview on SHARP Designation
Your company has an exemplary safety and health program and illness and injury rate. How did you do it?
There is not one clear answer to this question. It has taken a lot of hard work, dedication, and teamwork to accomplish this task. The biggest portion of the credit would have to go to the employees. I can write policies and procedures all day long, but without the dedication of our employees to, strictly follow them, they would be just another piece of paper. A lot of the credit would have to go to my Safety Team. Without them our Safety Department would crumble. They handle most of the day-to-day tasks and enforcement of the policies and procedures. Part of our Safety Team is the Safety Committee, who has been charged with evaluating every injury in the building, among other things. Last but not least, some of the credit has to go to "The Boss". I have never walked into her office with an idea and been told to leave, and believe me there have been many uncharted ideas. "The Boss" has always supported our Safety Program, both financially and personally.
What has Tech's value been in this process? Are there any differences that you noticed before Tech, and with Tech's involvement?
Georgia Tech has been a priceless asset in out endeavor for a safer work place. I started here in 2002, with a lot of work on my plate. With the help of Michelle Dunham and other GT Consultants, it made the task seem less daunting. It was nice to know that I could call or email them day or night with questions, and they would be there, not only to answer questions, but to assist with classes or anything else they could possibly do to help work the problem.
What does SHARP mean to you, your employees, and the company?
We take great pride in being the best at what we do. This SHARP Designation places us in an elite class and proves what can be accomplished with a genuine care for your fellow employee.
